In search of odd and ends
There, another evening spent quickly. An unexpected side effect of having new things to do.
I’d received the call that a new microphone had arrived for the video project (not my project, but that’s a detail). Could I print out a map and we’d head for the back of one of the local industrial parks, where suppliers of expensive gadgets hide inside small brick buildings.
My kitchen duty (regrinding a bag of coffee in the Magic Bullet, to appease the gods of early morning addiction) was complete, and I was up for a road trip, no matter how short or mundane. The company had a showroom full of neat audiovisual gadgetry – a turntable to do CD scratch for under $4000, or some new LED floodlights, or an even bigger mixer board than mine. I even recognized the tech on duty, as he’d demonstrated new “short throw” projection systems at the office only a week ago. Imagine, me recognizing someone in the city!
We were seeking a “moumoute”, also marketed under the sobriquet “DeadCat“. Off to the local electronic supply store (like a geek candy shop), where I managed to snag the various BNC connectors, short coaxial patch cords and other odds and ends for my next project. Parts are more expensive than thirty years ago, the printing on the labels is (much) smaller, but I now have a bag of goodies, should the rest of my kit arrive in the mails.
I’m not the kind of person that wants to shop for small bits and pieces on a regular basis, but it does fulfill a certain need (psychological?).
