My demographic rocks
There was no Auto-Tune unit available, and the local TV station in upstate New York cut away to present tornado warnings. Everything to keep the rest of us safe from the final pitchy moment of Season Nine.
The polite remark would be that there are no losers. The choice of voters, Lee DeWyze, in no way lessens the constant consistent effort of Crystal Bowersox throughout the season. It’s just the way things go. Rather, let’s focus on the more important moment this evening. Simon Cowell has retired. For real. The whole evening was one big lovefest in his honour.
No mistaking the demographic. Mine. From start to finish, the show honoured icons from my generation. Alice Cooper passes to the remaining Bee Gees, with a quick move across centre from Michael McDonald. Big feint from Christina Aguilera, before some good “roast humour” from Ricky Gervais.
Then, somebody I didn’t recognize, before Alanis came in to the game, with a solid end zone play from Chicago. You see what I mean; artists that began back when vinyl was the media of choice. We’re not done yet. Big song and dance moments with Janice Jackson (she sings better than she dances). A tender moment with Joe Cocker (the impossible moment, more like it).
In a fine family moment, the show brought back a stageful of former Idol contestants, with spotlight on almost all of the past winners (David Cook, MIA). And as the end of the second hour sounded, the call to dim the lights. Ryan read the name, and the anticlimax was over.
