Could you summarize that for the meeting?

posted in environment, politics |

I work around people that go to meetings. And when they are in those meetings, all too often somebody is determined that ideas will “go further” if the presenter presents, you guessed it, a Powerpoint Presentation. Let’s summarize this.

  • Ideas are important
  • Ideas are more important if preceded by a bullet
  • Graphic backgrounds add to the perceived quality of the presentation
  • No less than 30 slides in 30 seconds minutes
  • Take no prisoners

You might sense that I am mocking my peers. How perspicacious. Actually, there’s a growing dissatisfaction with the PPT cult. The New York Times, today, is carrying a story from the US military, where thousands of able bodied soldiers are otherwise occupied with preparation of presentations.

I invite you to Google the terms “Dilber and Powerpoint” for some very opinionated humour.

Our Parliament is back in the news. The Speaker has put the government on alert – produce the documents you’ve been squirreling away, or be held in contempt. The whole House shall be privy to content. I’m rather content to see this pointed out to the gang. Not even a party with a majority can ignore the other elected representatives of the people.

Another day of snow in the neighbourhood. Given that snow tires are in storage for most of us, this doesn’t add to the safety of the collective. I spoke with a coworker who had just arrived back from a “road trip” to Thetford, and he was pale. Up in the hills, the accumulations of snow were impressive and dangerous. As the saying goes, “If he had only known”.
