Perhaps it’s fate

posted in media |

Every once in a while, things just line up. Sort of like the planets in a conjunction, or the city buses at go-home time in the afternoon. When enough common elements are there, it just might be a “sign”.

My recent one involved a book, a poem and a movie. I was reading one of those time-fillers that I refer to as “bus books” because they serve the purpose of passing my time while public transit gets me from here to there. I go through a lot of cheap paperbacks in the run of a year. Anyhow, this one was set in the North and made reference to Grendel. As in Beowulf and Grendel. The literary references weren’t lost on me, but close to it. For Island trivia fans, this movie had only one star that i recognized; Sarah Polley, who played a fictional Islander for a good part of her professional life.
Within a couple of days, I received the latest audiobook effort by Seamus Heaney, Nobel Laureate. He has recently translated and published a new edition of, wait for it, Beowulf.

The long weekend was enough excuse to go renting videos with son #3, and given his love of medieval adventure, our harvest included “Beowulf And Grendel”. A rather good movie. Where else can you see a troll cut its own arm off amid the striking scenery of Iceland? No Bjork, but the soundtrack was haunting. I want one of those longboats. Anyhow. a movie I could watch again. Still, there has to be a deeper message here.

I suspect this is actually a sign that I should take all the computers in the house, reformat the drives with a decent Linux distro and put everything into place as, you guessed it, a Beowulf cluster. Perhaps it’s fate!
