Despite the mis-spelled title, a good watch
Sometimes, actors just have a fun time making a movie. This afternoon’s vote for the obvious goes out to Inglourious Basterds, non-trad spelling and all.
Don’t look to this one for a history lesson. About the only thing I could take as factual is that once upon a time, there was a war in Europe. For the rest, kick back and watch a great director work his magic. The gory bits are not enough to distract me; besides, Tarentino has presented worse for audience approval.
Think of this storyline as one with wheels within wheels. Despite the millions of bit players, the whole gang seems to be familiar – hell, downright neighbourly by moments. Don’t turn off the subtitles unless you are polyglot. Just go with the flow. All will end eventually, and along the way you’ll learn a few new card games.
I’d heard good things about the movie, but had to wait until the DVD showed up on the local club shelves. We set aside this afternoon, cranked up the surround sound and paused any time a member of the audience had to take a break (filling the washing machine, putting the dog out, answering the phone). All reasons why I prefer my home cinema to the one financed by bad popcorn.
One thing to watch for is the extraordinary acting (manic, by moments) of Christoph Waltz in the role of Col. Hans Landa. I’m unfamiliar with his earlier work, due to a certain language barrier, but I hope to catch some more of his efforts.
