A perception of lag

posted in economy |

This week is taking its own sweet time to get from start to stop. My calculation shows exactly the same number of hours as any other week (time changes excepted), but the subjective side states something very different. Only Thursday?

The storm that passed me by was just insult added to injury. Right now I feel like I’m caught up in some unfortunate version of busrider marathon; 100 minutes this morning, another 100 this evening. Tomorrow, with the weekend in sight, risks exacting a toll on my usual good humour. Enough already! I want to relax, on my own terms.

Went through some version of online shopping from hell this morning. Last evening, I placed an order with an online store. The payment section had the hiccups, and my transaction didn’t “take” the first few times. Finally, I switched to a different browser and a different money system, with success. I thought…

This morning, my inbox had a sudden upsurge in traffic, thanking me for my orders. Note the plural. Even though their site had refused my custom and left me with an explanation that certain general difficulties were affecting the commerce, today all had been forgiven and my orders (again, note the plural) were in the system and ready to ship.

I don’t panic easily, but for the next fifteen minutes I filled out online complaint forms, sent emails and finally opted for the hated “chat with a customer representative” module. The customer IS always right, and I managed to cancel all of the great deals but one. That I accept, graciously. Still, not reassuring, given that I’m used to dealing with the world via the Internet. Think what a less experienced shopper might find arriving with the friendly UPS guy.
