The chain of curiosity shoppes

posted in travel |

Today, Southern Kings County is the destination of choice. With a jug of chocolate milk as nourishment, we headed down, all the way down, to Murray River. This is a place that I haven’t been to very many times. Just not on the road to where I might be going, let’s say. We found a rather tempting book store, run by a woman from Detroit who has eclectic tastes and a belief in alternate energy sources. Good place to visit again.

Across the street was a warehouse converted into the mothership of curious things to buy. “Magic Dragon”. The owner collected some of our tourist dollars last summer when we stopped into a converted church near Belfast to admire carved furniture from Indonesia, woven blankets from Mexico, slag glass and stoneware. She has expanded to three locations this year, and the offerings are eyecatching. We got off easy with some more blankets, a glass paperweight, some jewelry and a “conversation piece” that involves wooden ducks carrying a hollow globe made of coconut wood. The place has a chimney strapped to the ceiling and serves as a factory outlet for handmade snare drums and bodhrans.

We took back roads back to Montague, with a visit to the stone church in Sturgeon and supper at the Gillis Diner beside the Mountie barracks in Brudenell. Good food and mixed messages; should we have sat in the car with our four-way flashers on, ordered at the takeout counter or waited for table service? We adopted a ad-hoc combination that got us some good seafood at a reasonable price. Pity about the country music, though. I would have expected either some good 50’s rock or something, anything else…

Rainbows over Cape Breton, a great sunset on the North side and a campfire. Summertime bliss.
