Come sail away

posted in travel |

One of the top draws to Souris is an attraction that only stays around for a couple of hours a day. The ferry linking PEI to the Magdalen Islands, the MV Madeleine is there between 13h00 and 14h00 most days, a beehive of activity on a an otherwise quiet waterfront. The ship is large enough to have crossed the mighty Atlantic, although much smaller craft have done the same. Most don’t try to fill the interior with as many cars and trucks as can be shoehorned in before leaving the quay.

I was surprised to see a local car dealer drive up in a brand new truck, unbolt the yellow license plate and hand the keys over to one of the crew members just prior to sailing time. The last vehicle on, even after the motorcycle riders without helmets. I guess I’d never much thought about the mechanics of getting a “new rig” when I was living over there.

We enjoyed a requisite snack at Greco Donair before a stint of wardriving in downtown Souris. This consisted of moving the car a few hundred metres at a time until one of the half dozen signals betrayed its “open” status. Free internet. A chance to update the blog, catch the weather and read a local newspaper before we returned to cook up a supper of fresh fish. Windy weather and propane stoves is a slow cookers dream combination. No danger of burned food here.

The weather is very important when your home is made of nylon and extruded aluminum. We dealt with high winds, thunder and rain squalls for the rest of the evening. Did listen to a documentary on sleep patterns thanks to CBC Cape Breton 107.1 that comes in much better than CBC Charlottetown 96.1 down in the hollow.
