Packing for every eventuality

posted in computing |

I can imagine one of my snarkier friends saying something like “Show me what you have on your laptop and I’ll tell you who you are.” Not far from wrong. With the idea of a road trip floating, it’s time to plan the baggage list.

We are campers. That means that the minimum of a tent without large tears, an air mattress that doesn’t require inflation every eight hours and sleeping bags that still isolate and insulate. Add in some sort of stove (to assure hot coffee) along with a certain primitive supply of cooking utensils, plus the cooler that digests ice blocks. Some folding chairs would be nice, and that (as yet) untested kitchen shelter will also add to the load. Are we ready, yet? Not exactly.

We might be “off the grid” for a few weeks, but there’s always a chance encounter with a wifi cloud, so the computers are requiring certain preparations. What software has to be installed before we leave the comfort of home behind?

Take it for granted that dual-boot machines will require working browsers on both platforms. Ditto for VOIP and tools to store and display any digipics. An office suite (although I have no idea in what context I might actually need a spreadsheet) is part of the basic installation. All of my family tree stuff, with a variety of report generators, just in case. A virtual planetarium, because it will be dark for hours each day, and the sky is the only show in view. I’m ready for my basic music needs, and there’s a Bible, just because (in Latin, just because). About the only thing that is needed is a tool to find wifi clouds.
