Small sometimes trumps large

posted in media, technology |

I feel better now. One of the little marvels of new technology (Skype) has finally “entered” my workplace. Nothing too flashy or forced on the whole family; we used the peered version to allow a job interview this afternoon. From small steps to marathon runs.

There are many instances where a new tool will solve a problem in ways that the expensive toys cannot. Here we were, with a respectable sum of cash invested in traditional videoconference hardware and no way to talk to a person that didn’t have a similar system on the other end. Enter the little train that could, and with a minimum of fuss the tests were done, the interview was scheduled and all went home a little happier at the end of the day. Now if only the weather would improve.

I can think of dozens of other “not ready for prime time” ideas that would get some of our undone tasks out of the way, but it’s not easy to move the minds of those who believe that the best must cost a fortune. Here’s another example of viral success: some musicians had the bad luck to have to travel by commercial air recently.

I know, they should have taken the train. Hindsight. Anyhow, they saw an expensive guitar (one of their own) get thrashed by baggage handlers. I feel their pain. Requests for compensation fell on deaf ears, so they decided to sing about their woes, on YouTube. The results are (so far) filled with promise, because big business hates when the truth is heard. Sing out!
