It is too late to be a pessimist

posted in education, environment |

Tonight I feel rather tiny, and rather embarrassed. My species is greedy, and the whole ecological system of Gaia is changing due to us. However, I’ve learned a new catch phrase in the last ninety minutes. I have to share: It’s too late to be a pessimist.

Today is the release date for an astonishing documentary, produced by Luc Besson and . The film is directed by Yann Arthur-Bertrand and has been released to those who want to watch using the Internet as a primary distribution method. Ninety minutes on YouTube; this is not your average videoclip.

The scenery is breath-taking. We’ve been lucky enough to have HD available. Footage gathered around the globe with the goal of awakening the world to the physical beauty of our planet, in all its fragility. No matter where you turn, mankind leaves traces. Our world has gone from pockets of population with huge ranges of wilderness to pockets of wilderness with… I mustn’t exaggerate.

There is no new message in this film. For anyone willing to listen, we’ve been warned from all sides. Sadly, we continue to accept governance by a few for a few. Is there anything more telling than the current efforts to prop up the automotive industry and exploit the oil sands of Alberta, when the effort that would be best undertaken is a decision to abandon the personal auto and reduce our use of fossil fuels?

If I dare to examine my diet, or my employment, or my leisure activity, the reality is that I am not doing the world any environmental favours. My carbon footprint is large, and I can no  longer excuse myself by pointing a finger at others. This evening, I urge you to watch this documentary and draw your own conclusions. It’s too late to be a pessimist.

The website is Home-2009.com and the message is simple. We’re almost out of time.
