Having a warm spell

posted in technology |

It finally happened. I opened the ‘fridge for a glass of milk and it was dark inside. No jokes, please!

Checked to see if the bulb was loose. Nope. Turned the dial that I warn others never to touch; no noise. Down to the breaker panel in the basement, where one blue switch was not like the others. This I can handle; push, reset, POP! Good flash of light there. Try again. Same result.

Could be the breaker. The only way to be sure is to move the big old ‘fridge out of its cave, where it has been hiding for better than twenty years (please ignore the floor underneath. Thank you.) I plugged the line cord into another socket; more fireworks and the computers across the room all shut off.

At this point, I have diagnosed the problem to be an electrical one, with the appliance at fault. Such powers of reasoning. Time to get down to the nitty gritty and empty the beast’s innards. Thankful that we didn’t do a big round of groceries this weekend, that we have a freezer and camping coolers in the basement and hungry people to eat (the food; cannibals we are NOT) before the warm spell becomes serious.

Refrigerators are easy to replace in a large city, so tomorrow will be a shopping day. This evening, we’ve exercised rarely used muscles as a group. The monolith is now on the front doorstep and the floor cleaned up. I think I shall sleep; tomorrow will bring other challenges.
