Just a few tunes to pass some time

posted in music |

A quiet evening at home with the dog and some music. I opted to not go and watch the Watchmen (someone has to stay home and answer the steady stream of telephone calls for other members of the house, and the dog has resisted all attempts to train her to the task). And music has its own virtues.

My musical tastes are reasonably eclectic. I can handle just about anything that shows up on the popular media channels. Even rap, which technically isn’t music; unedited poetry with a percussive background. Others in the house may disagree, which is why I rarely get to listen to my choices without taking refuge in headphones or a closed room. You see, among all the styles available, my personal preference is for celtic. My roots, my predilection, my eventual performance goal. After all, disco eschewed the fiddle.

I wonder if our musical tastes are defined by exposure, or parental guidance, or something less definable. I heard a lot of country when I was living at home, but there was also a weekly dose of Maritime fiddle, or accordian by Mr. Hibbs from the Rock. Dean Martin crooned, and Perry Como and Juliette were also thrown into the mix. I had a solid base in school concert band fare (Holst rocks!).

The good times, though, involved Ryan’s Fancy and similar content, and now that I have matured (into a fine person), the selection available on channels/sites like galaxie.ca can keep me calm for hours on end. Right now, Kendra McGillivray (now qualifies as Island content) is laying down a fine air; where is my fiddle? The fact that I can listen either in front of a digital TV upstairs or here on the laptop is a bonus.
