A look in the rear-view mirror

posted in economy |

Somewhere, I read that we have to know where we’ve been to know where we are (going). I’m watching the “first news conference” from the new president, and his ability to speak is such a pleasant distraction after the last eight years, but that’s not what I started to write about. Fortuitous timing. Let’s return to the regular programming.

Here is a link to a short feature film: PEI content. I’m also going to link to the page where I found it; one of them should last for a while. The original was “shot” sometime before my arrival, but the substance remains entirely valid. At no point do I feel “lost” in either time or space. In fact, someone with the right equipment could probably reproduce most of the footage, although it would require laying some rail or buying a ferry boat from our friends over in Ireland (isn’t that where most of the used ships in the area were procured?)

The emphasis on the Anne house and the golf industry should be a call to renewal; if PEI Tourism still depends on the same attractions that were in place at the end of WW Two, then someone needs a new gameplan. I know, golfers are easily amused, and there are a lot of people living in Japan that haven’t come visiting (yet). What about the rest of the world?

Maybe the silver fox industry doesn’t pay as well as it used to, and free-range chickens are not the answer to a global economic readjustment, but this bit of nostalgia shows a distinct lack of imagination among current planners.
