Is it still a parade, if nobody marches?

posted in education |

Following the lead of a classmate (thanks, Bob) I joined a band, (a long time ago). Not what you think; this was a classic English brass ensemble, and we had uniforms.  Spent the autumn going to weekly practice in a small hall, and then prepared for our first public appearance. Not the ban’s; they had been around for a ling time (if I could go by the old, framed photographs  in the hall. Anyhow, there was grumbling about how I  wasn’t wearing high sidewalls, below my uniform cap.

Looking back, we should have been dressed more appropriately in late November than our hand-me-down military cut tunics.

About the same time, CSNY released their single “Almost Cut My Hair”. I hadn’t, hence the grumbling, and I didn’t. Once the joy of Christmas had passed, I returned my uniform atnd instrument (as side drum) and got on with my life.

This, as a response to the local “reverse Santa parade” from this afternoon. I wasn’t involved, other than as a witness to the strange dress requirements for standing near a stationary float, as local cars drove by and tooted their horns in honour.

I noted that there was a seafood fire, today. That one (still trying to wrap my head around it, given the lack of details) had people offering extra barn shelter for any homeless livestock… because nobody knew for sure, and this is a rural province. It could have been a barn fire, and we care about the victims. I did check a related website, and this might be a case of “smoked oysters”. Do they smoke clams? So much to learn.
