Drama or melodrama

posted in humour |

A lifetime of watching TV drama has left me prepared. Probably not in a rational way, but we’ll see how this plays out. So here’s the hook.

Elsewhere in the world, there’s a pandemic. Here, not so much. The odd case straggling off an airplane, or crossing our bridge. But, no big deal. We’re on an island, which means that the bug would have to swim ashore. I did mention rational, right? Today, our local garage locked its main entrance. No coming in there, without a really good reason. And among the neighbours, a thread that there were actually cases of “positives” around here.

And then Twitter, where all the news that matters will eventually show up, carried some veiled warnings from the government. There were exposures noted, at a local garage. Not our garage, but I see why locking the door suddenly seemed like a plan. Here’s the thing; I do follow the press briefings by the public health officer. Most of them, anyway. And I had not heard about this. Nor had I been to the garages, but that’s part of the panic in a pandemic. In case of symptoms, get tested. Then be prepared to self-quarantine for a fortnight. Hey, I’ve been doing just that (the self-quarantine) for about two years. Doesn’t that count?

The next episode in my personal TV show won’t air for a few more days, so I’m forced to remain on high alert. Drama, in my dull life. Should I tell the kids, in case they’re tempted to make a trip over here (we’re also waiting on a hurricane)? I didn’t plan to, but my preparation for how to respond to a disaster has been set up by TV. With ad breaks, every few minutes.
