Just a DIY maintenance guy

posted in technology |

Our genny is a faithful servant. Sits outside, beside the house, through the worst of weather. Waiting for a chance to serve us. In return, randomly, I check the status window and decide if any maintenance is required.

It’s been over one hundred (not consecutive) hours since my last lessons in home-based how to. This time around, I hadn’t even noticed a yellow light, hidden behind the rhubarb leaves. But today the weather was good, and I was bored, so I got all concerned about what the internal service logs might reveal.

Turns out, I am due to change the oil. And the filters. And the spark plugs. First time for that detail. These are not the sort of things one keeps around the house, so after some careful reading, and a nifty YT video where the kids were totally involved in helping dad make a mess, I decided that I could handle this. A check on Amazon, and I now have a “schedule B” box on order, along with five litres of motor oil, of which I actually need two. The others will form a stockpile towards the next, next time. And if all goes well, sometime around the end of the month, genny will be ready for any stormy weather (when the best work is done on my behalf).

Actually, I’m looking forward to my very first spark plug transplant. Cars don’t require that sort of hands-on, any more. Note to self: find out why. And my junk oil jug should have enough room for this job, before I try to find someone that likes to take toxic materials off my hands.
