Involving the professionals

posted in education |

I’m trying to resolve the dichotomy between paying a professional and learning a whole new trade. The story of my life, actually. In reflection, I don’t have the knowledge required for so many things. YouTube can take a person to a certain point (realizing how little I actually know?)

This afternoon, I sat through a detailed video on performing routine maintenance on a Diesel motor. Yes, I understood the principles, but to go from there to actually ordering parts, finding a place where oil stains wouldn’t be critical, getting things back in the right order… I am really not convinced that I could. Or should. Maybe this will be an excuse for a road trip.

He same rules of thumb applied while the basement was being renovated. I could have handled the simple tasks; mudding a wall comes to mind. However, going the full distance, installing a complete bathroom, changing critical electrical systems (the list is very long) I think we made the right choice to bring in a professional. Looking ahead, to the moment where the roof needs replacing, or we change out an exterior door; again, bring in someone that knows what they are about. I’ll hold firm on stuff like changing light bulbs. Can’t screw that up, right?

I wonder if the dog realizes just how poorly trained I am to maintain his comfort levels?

Not much that I can add here. I’m really a rookie at so many jobs, and the availability of training seems to have collapsed. A result of geography and age. Perhaps we need to bring the kids back into the scenario. They’re trainable.
