Who said what?

Based on the display panel, the winds had stopped. Completely. As in, “don’t let the tree tops fool you”. But I knew it wasn’t so. The dog had developed an aversion to wandering around outside, because the world was covered in a thin layer of ice.

The rain had started, close to dawn, but at the same time the thermometer had fallen to that crucial point where what falls, stays. Stationary. Even the wind vane was caught in armor. Of course, I found a thin switch, and sallied forth to defend the vane, beating the ice off until the cups returned to spinning.

That was about all there was of note, today. We didn’t send out the shopping squad, and traffic was inconsequential, out on the highway. Around here, people know when it is wiser to sit and wait.

Someone on social media posted a sound bite that resembled nothing so much as a learning recorder student, practicing the first study in the manual. When other were asked to identify the air, the real answer came up quickly. This was the lonesome call of a “Northern Saw-whet Owl”. No “who” heard here.

Chatting with son #3, who wondered if he would know if he had the dreaded Covid. Based on symptoms and temperature, no. We looked at his options; walking for almost an hour each way, plus the quiet time in health care, on a holiday weekend might be more than he could bear. And so now we wait, for any progression. Our medical system is free, but the wait times are at user cost.
