Pay for that unused service

posted in economy, travel |

Maybe I should fly more. The whole industry has been off my radar for a long time, and learning that the government is about to offer a seven billion dollar bailout is wrong, on so many levels.

The airlines haven’t been flying, so with their employees laid off, using the “expenses” excuse doesn’t fly (pardon my punny voice). And if it comes down to stockholder profits, I’m solidly in the “hell, no, not with my dime” camp. We used to have a passenger rail system, but that went the way of the dodo bird. Meanwhile, successive governments have continued to rationalize the aviation industry; planes are built with my money, airports are built with my money, and now we have this wail of despair about how more money is needed! Did I mention that the planes haven’t been flying in this direction for a long time? Government: use some common sense.

I know, this is a large nation, and without airplanes people will be stuck on the ground. So be it. I really don’t give a flying whatever that you can’t find the time to drive from A to B. Perhaps reconsider the necessity of your travel.

Rant mode off.

Outside, the birds are plentiful. The ocean still has ships moving about. Maybe not right here, but about. And in a few months, the birds will welcome the bees, the flowers, the trees. I firmly believe it will get warm again. Oh, and that obvious lack of sea ice tells me more than I really want to know. Does anyone think about the whelping seals?
