Is your library sufficient to your needs?
I have read that “you are what you eat”. Perhaps, although most of that goes off to unseen places. I believe that we are actually “what you read”. Otherwise, most of our knowledge has to come from listening to others; a skill that few possess.
I do read, a lot. Less of the formal, bound book content than a generation ago. Online, unless you live by cat videos, reading is required. And we have such an abundance of material available. Why, I can scarcely recall life before the web. Was all knowledge found in a Whole Earth catalog? Since I’ve never gone mountain climbing, or shopped for a parachute, I think not.
I’d like to believe that my ability to read (and retain) is above average. You can’t play Trivia with the encyclopedia on the tabletop (or can you? Could be a strategy, if others weren’t paying adequate attention.) And I tend to wander down rabbit holes. How else can I explain even knowing what a rabbit hole IS?
What about you? Is your home library sufficient to the need, or do you find yourself yearning for an afternoon in a good book store or a large library? I can remember the joy I felt, hiding away in the third storey of the campus library; terrible air quality, but such an array of volumes, all purchased to fulfill a need. I would love to go back there, but the building has been repurposed, and the newer library has good duct work. No corners with a risk of falling asleep due to the CO2 levels.
