Local reps should be locally chosen
It stormed, overnight. Nothing noisy, but we went from no snow on the ground to a recorded 34cm. Decent amount. And I did what I had to do: I dressed appropriately, took my shovel to the scene of the battle, removed the remains. A big drift, mainly. No sudden onset of infarctus, so I guess I have passed my “stress test”. No, don’t call the doctor.
Happened across a political editorial with an important question. First, let me set the scene. We live in a country with elected representatives. Chosen by their peers, before the election. Local flavour, to handle local initiatives. I’ll say it again: chosen by their peers.
Choosing your candidate is an important ritual, with long history and suitable pageantry. In this case, one party has wandered off course. Their new candidate wasn’t chosen locally. Instead, there was an acclamation and appointment, by the national leadership. Again: appointed, by the nationals. That isn’t sitting well here. Yes, their candidate is probably the best they can offer, but the failure to (at least) pretend that this is a local decision might be costly in the next round of voting.
Oh well. It could be worse. Look to the south, where another impeachment trial will begin in the morning. Don’t quibble with details. This is a second trial, on new charges, for someone that was already impeached and then “saved from trial”. This time around, the details have changed. Someone no longer has the “cloak of invincibility” that goes with the title of President. We might get some interesting back story, once the gavel is struck.
