Looking back to before the big pause

posted in history, politics |

One year ago, I was self-congratulating on the novelty of international travel. And getting my toes wet in a new ocean. That was all before someone hit the pause button on our lives.

I’ve been at home, constantly, for many months now. Enough time to self-congratulate on my choice of venue. The view of the ocean never gets old. Ditto for my trees; they are MY trees, according to the taxation office. We now have regular fox visits, and although there hasn’t been a cardinal sighting, our bird count is up.

Proof that I am getting older: today, the obituary for one of my better high school teachers served as a life lesson. Nothing (and nobody) lasts forever.

I realize that I haven’t watched the news on TV for a long time. Not because I don’t care. Rather, a release from the need to know. I can always look things up.

The most recent scandal, politically, involves a cabinet minister in Ontario that went on vacation. Stealth mode.  According to the official press, no notice was given; just business as usual. You know; faked TV interviews, and a premier that claimed he was “totally shocked”. The rest of the province isn’t buying the story. Today, the minister resigned.

There’s some lingering doubts. Why did he go? Why did he return? Could he have taken the trip to verify his personal investments (offshore banking isn’t for everyone)? We may never know. Let’s accept that this leaves more egg on the face of a government that hasn’t handled duties well. No election, soon, but memories are long.
