Saved: one museum
How about that? Make enough noise (in earshot of the general public) and politicians can change their course. In the case of the largest railway museum, in Newfoundland, it seems to have worked. Several weeks ago, the word leaked out that the city council in St. John’s had decided to “re-purpose” the space used by a wonderful museum. One with steady visitors, dynamic exhibits, the whole rail yard. Fortunately, the community reacted, and with enough negative press, the council has decided (as of yesterday) to put together a business plan that actually makes sense. Bravo!
I dabble in the museum world, and trying to keep funding and public interest coupled together isn’t a given. Here on the Island, we have had the good fortune to have governmental involvement (in the good sense). However, the request for a real brick and mortar site has gone unanswered, so far. Perhaps this pandemic downtime will help convince those who control the purse strings to come up with a long term solution.
Sitting back, watching a virtual family discussion about the right choice for new winter coats brought back the memory of my “hydro parka”. Oversize, really ugly in the industrial sense, but warm. I wonder do they still sell them (you have to remember that I have been out of the retail loop for close to a year). AND my current coat is just fine; oddly, similar in colour and style to my parka from almost a half-century ago. I haven’t had any near brushes with frostbite, so all is good. Yes, I’m ready for the next bit of cold weather.
