Oversized doodle

posted in environment, history |

The next time you commit to the creation of a doodle image, think big. I’m unsure how people missed this one until recently (although I suspect that the lack of personal drones played a role), but in Peru the announcement of the discovery of an enormous cat drawing on a hillside has made news around the world.

First of all, check out the display. Use the humans in lower corner for scale.

Now, think about how good one of your own efforts, (made while on hold on the telephone, for example) might look if scaled up to something that covers a nearby slope.

Oddly, other prehistoric images have been seen for a long time. Google “Nazca” as a starting point. How did this hilly-kitty get missed? Was it not alien enough? Inquiring minds want to know.

I’ve gone over the available aerial photos for my part of the world. Discovered a few long-gone barns, but that’s the extent of it. Oh, and what might be the remains of a bridge, just down the road. Served as a conversation starter during one of our local history meetings, a couple of years ago. I really should head over that way, next year, at low tide, when the water gets warm enough for a good wade.

Actually, the only artifacts of any note around here are those left by the railway. Not even rails. Trails. The discerning eye can trace the route on any modern “satellite photo”. Or, you can wander, pretty much any afternoon. Bring your bug spray, as forethought.
