May Day

posted in music |

This would have fit better yesterday, but never late than ever. I just finished watching one of the few music videos that celebrated the May Pole, Morris dancers, the Doruschuk brothers, a guest appearance by Kathleen Sergerie and a dwarf. Ring any memory bells, yet? Well, obviously, it was the Safety Dance, by Men Without Hats, originally a hit way back in 1983. Two decades, and still it holds a special place on the shelf of memories.

One difference now is that with a few passes through Google, one can find “way too much information” on almost any topic. I didn’t remember all the salient details, but now I know that the Morris dancers were a troupe from near Wiltshire, UK and that the red ribbons actually would have indicated that the village suffered from an epidemic of syphilis. The donkey and the missile launcher were just there. The video can be downloaded for those who need to watch it before another twenty years go by.
With the state of spiders, this entry will probably add to someone else’s trivia search, and on goes the dance.
