Good coverage

Is it noisy where you work? Unless you spend your days in an old school boiler factory, complete with sledge hammers and rivet teams, probably your days are spent in an environment that allows conversation with your coworkers. Ditto for play time, where the sound level is perhaps a bit elevated, but you can handle the pain.

Now, let’s flip forward to the Grey Cup match today in Montreal. In passing, the Alouettes didn’t show consistent effort, and Calgary ate their lunch. Bad dogs! The fan intensity was excruciating, if the decibels can serve as a measure. Both teams went into this afternoon expecting the volume of praise; Calgary even practiced with piped in sound effect through the last week. Still, a sound meter showing in excess of 100 dB at field level made an impression on me.

Forget the usual Hup! Hup! stuff. One quarterback signalled his intentions each play by lifting his leg (another part of the bad dog syndrome), since audibles were out. It worked, but the idea of a quiet afternoon watching the game was not part of the day for the 65,000 in attendance at the Big O.

I also have to comment on the quality of the camerawork on TSN today. Rarely do we see such detail, or such excellent use of angles in coverage of CFL games. Although the stadium ambience is probably very special, I had a much better “shot” of most plays, and the colour commentary also added to the spectacle. A great job!

Two days, two good games. Not much to look forward to for next weekend.
