Drought ends, suddenly
Coming awake to the sound of driving rain is reassuring. Our drought might end, and the sump system still works. Overnight, a calming 25mm of new water. No need to ration. Of course, the first worry is whether newly placed flowers might be “set free”, but that didn’t happen either. Apparently this was the tail of a tropical storm (still hurricane free).
I actually went to visit other people, in their home, today. They had a dog! Shows how cut off I’ve been from the world.
A lot of dialog right now, about how we can convince the powerful to let the PWE (Protestant Work Ethic) lapse, even if temporarily. Some levels of government have adopted policies that try to keep the economy alive with injection of funds to the “working class”. However, there are those that are convinced that pay without work will ruin our society. Not based on any proof; rather, it’s a mindset. I can remember when the term PWE came up in an introductory sociology course. I figured that this was going to be the great reveal – why I had attended a different school system than that of my neighbours, based on faith. Turns out, all I did was memorize the names of a few dead white males. Fast forward to 2020, and it is clear that nothing has changed.
A fascinating video yesterday, showing two freighters colliding in the Welland Canal. As near as I can tell, the captains knew enough to blow their whistles, but not enough to steer away. Or as a pundit put it, Gordon Lightfoot will be writing another hit song: “The Wreck of the Florence Spirit”.
