Free ice!

posted in Wx |

Finally, a bit of weather with some bite to it! We were ready, in the sense that schools closed before the bus fleet was out and about. Then, we waited.

The simple chatter of ice drops on windows is calming, when you have no earthly reason to be outside.  The dog doesn’t think such things through, and he requested (politely) at regular intervals to be allowed to wander under a grey sky. Never for long; he also requests refuge when the discomfort level peaks. And so went the afternoon. She who wants to try the world in winter (be it skis, snowshoes, whatever) was restless. I did suggest that wearing her brightest rain clothes, with a flashing lamp on her head and toothed footwear would work, but after consultation with the dog, she agreed to stay inside.

At one point, I had to go out with a long pole and beat some layered ice away from the anemometer and antennae, but that is also part of the charm of our first “ice storm” in a long time. This particular system closed schools in ON, QC, NB, NS, NL and PE; about as inclusive a list as I’ve seen for weather related stories. Here, the power is on, and the floors are warm. We’ll face tomorrow with caution.

Actually, this winter has been a flop, so far. No cabin fever (other than the self-induced variety). The strait is still free of ice. Down in Antarctica (summer weather), the temperatures have reached 65F, which is a new record. Believe me, this climate change thing isn’t a government myth to put new taxes into place.
