The right nuts

posted in technology |

What a find! The right size of nut (mechanical) in both locking and wing formats. I realize that most of my project ideas come up against the wall of hardware not being available, at least locally. I found a set of ¼-20 bolts, a couple of weeks ago. Today, the matching nuts. Why can’t hardware stores stock both at the same time?

Sure, in a bigger place, etc. I don’t live in that mystical bigger place any more; when I did I couldn’t wait to get away. Now, having the freedom to find most of my small quantity needs close by would be so practical. Why, I’ve even sourced stuff via eBay and Amazon, which is not practical for anyone or anything.  The reason why people pay high prices for (name the item) is that it is impractical to build it yourself. Radio Shack (in the old format), I miss you too.

Not to fret. Apparently we’re getting a plumber to come by, so for the next little bit I’ll have shower installation woes. Again, parts that require two hours plus on the road, but in the end I won’t have to do this again in my lifetime. I hope.

I went for a small grocery run this afternoon. Dirty out there. On the way back, speeds seemed to be bogged down around 45 kph, which meant that I could listen to a long radio program about how getting close to the sun is tricky. I didn’t realize that for some space missions, using nearby planets as a slingshot was real science. Now I know.
