More ties that bind
Guess what? The national rail strike is ending. After some intense negotiations, the government simply shook the “back to work legislation” rattle, and normal life returned. Just like every other time. Funny how the government can see the pain felt by corporations like that. Also funny how the government only gets involved when money is involved. Social reform? What’s that?
I’m still trying to teach my children, so the above rant is part of an earlier conversation. I mean, I am slightly biased towards the rights of the worker, but that’s an incidental thing.
I received a call from the local hospital, this afternoon; someone we know socially was in, as interned, and wanted visitors. Now, this doesn’t affect me directly, but during the visit, while comparing notes on life with the daughter, it became clear that this wasn’t the first meeting of the minds. In fact, there had been a common session in summer school, fully forty-five years earlier. Common meals, common residence. A group photo taken by yours truly (that’s my role in this play). And the daughter is married to the brother of my cousin’s former husband and their children are close cousins (that’s my life in a small place). Consider the possibilities, going forward, when I’ve unlinked the ties that bind everyone we meet, and I have to look further afield for amusement. Only a matter of time.
Another binge watch underway. Seems we’ve passed beside several seasons of a popular sitcom (of course, Modern Family) and now the story will be on in the background until we run out of data to stream.
