Perched on the edge

posted in environment |

Sometime during my long years in high school, I almost visited Niagara Falls. The almost is important; while on a trip, we came close enough to spot some of the landmarks in that area. Not the actual water, but in my head it was clear; I had visited, and lived to remember.

Fast forward to this afternoon, when I learned that the shipwreck perched just above the precipice moved closer in the last couple of days. No, I didn’t see this, then or now. But with the help of Google Maps, I can add another regional attraction to my list. Will I go there to verify things? Probably not. The falls in Quebec City ARE higher, after all.

The dog and I were up to our own walking trail, late this afternoon. There to provide transport and support to a cyclist who had run out of power. It happens. I had expected the approach to be spectacular, but the only warning of the arrival was a minimal bell tone. The dog didn’t even notice. Silent running, and all that.

Locally, concerned citizens want to know if we’re getting more windmills. More silent running, from my point of view. But, the council did vote against any increase in infrastructure, and there is a bylaw. Hence, the dismay to discover a map showing siting, and word that roadwork has started. Almost as if the corporate team wants to dare the neighbourhood. For me, the ideal would be to see the erection of the masts, followed by a huge legal kerfuffle, leading to stuff coming back down. Still too early to predict outcomes, but the winter should be interesting.
