A security strategy
What, when, where or with whom I eat shouldn’t be weather related, but it can be. This morning, despite (or in spite of) the rain, we went for breakfast. Our group was downsized, as some had decided to watch a local foot race. Slippery going, I imagine, what with mud and slick leaves. Another of our group, present and accounted for, was wearing a fancy body harness. Seems there had been an unplanned encounter with a tree, and as a result… well, suffice to assume that there was pain involved.
That’s the thing. As one gets older, what would have been simply an unplanned event can take on a whole other level of severity. I try to avoid what my kids refer to as “stupid pet tricks”, but eventually I’m going to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Why, just the other day, there was an inconvenient question about the provenance of a bruise on one arm. I had no pain, so I had to think about it. Finally, I remembered. Running with an oversize box (containing a heavy saw), I had outrun myself and did a front splat. On top of the box, so no tearing of fabric (or tissue). However, the result could have been “bigger”. I’ve resolved not to run with power tools.
If you ask me why my bicycle has received less wear and tear, it goes with the above. I could fall, and it could hurt. Until I figure out a security strategy, I’ll leave the bike securely attached to my winter resistance trainer. That way, a fall will occur in the privacy of my own basement, at a controlled speed. Physics on my side.
