Floor-level contiguity

posted in environment |

For the best part of four decades, my life has been spent in an oversize room. Yes, our house has walls (and doors), but the living space is contiguous (think about the 48 states, without borders, if it helps). Hadn’t really considered anything else, as our house (two of them, now) were built using an open area theme.

Until I came across an article in a magazine. Life wasn’t always so, architecturally . In fact, one of the big names associated with open space is Frank Lloyd Wright. You remember; he designed that house with a waterfall inside/outside. Not quite the effect I had, when one of the kids let the tub run over, and we had a small cascade in the general area of the stairs. But I digress.

Open area is a modern thing. From my point of view, it makes running the vacuum cleaner easier, and if we decide to exercise the dog, he can run circles around us (fast little critter). I rather like it; no wondering what is going on behind closed doors, especially when I’m alone for the afternoon. I would willingly share my floor plan, but it’s available, online, elsewhere. Just use your Google skills.

If ever I need one of those “walker” chairs, I will be able to go from the TV to the fridge and then back again without obstacle. Worth it, just for that feature. And the light from our windows goes so much farther, what with the removal of corners and such. There, you’re sold, right? Here’s a link to the article I mentioned. You can compare working notes.
