Wishing for skilled help

posted in technology |

In a marketplace with limited competition, how does anything ever get done? We would love to get a bit of renovation completed, and actually managed to find someone who will take on the task list. The catch is that all of the other “trades”, which are required to complete the list, are in very short supply. We’re not alone; after talking to some others in our area, I now realize that hiring a professional is hit or miss.

Take your pick: plumber, electrician, HVAC, roofer. None are available on short notice. Either the big sites have a lock on their expertise, or the people are simply elsewhere. In the winter, I get it. The west beckons, and pays well. But doesn’t everyone dream of spending the summer here in paradise? I jest, but only a little.

I could bring in all the books I want, thanks to Black and Decker and friends, but the learning curve is long and filled with pitfalls. I don’t really want an indoor swimming pool. Or worse, an electrified indoor swimming pool, cooled artificially and partially covered by the roof I didn’t quite know how to finish. I’m good for simple tasks: I can change a light bulb or a door knob. Get much above that, on the skilled list, and I wimp out. Hence the shout out to those with the prized Red Seal.

We might have to wait until the summer rush (is that how you refer to it?). Keep our dreams for the chill of autumn, and offer recompense above scale. I hope not, but I’m trying to be realistic.
