Upon the loss of my only superpower
This morning started with a quick session of someone dropping expensive chemistry onto my “new and improved” eyeball, before we abandoned the dog to his place in the car and took a taxi several blocks to the clinic. I’ve had more commercial rides in two days than during the previous two decades! Yes, we could have taken our own car, but parking is hit or miss, sometimes, and we were short of time. As in no minutes to spare.
Little matter. In the clinic, their team was standing by, and I had a chance to demonstrate my new visual skills; yes, still based on the alphabet, but I could see more than before. Enough to merit a line in my personal file. And don’t ask about the other eye, aka the disappointing one.
Anyhow, the doctor convinced me that what I now had was what I needed (notice the absence of want as a criteria). My only superpower, the ability to read really fine print, is now gone forever. As a replacement, Wal-Mart sells reading glasses (I now own a pair, for the first time in my life).
The GPS chose a new route out of the city, which seems to be the norm. Either all roads lead out of Halifax, or I’m lost and getting back home by luck. We did the usual four hours plus on the road, with my personal discomfort augmented by a diuretic that the doc slipped me just before we set off. I want to note that snow cover is missing, in the sections of NS, NB and PE I visited today. Except for the parking lot at Wal-Mart, where they’re stockpiling the stuff. Is this part of a new corporate outreach?
We were under sunlit skies all day (so bright!). Our two stops for groceries assured that if there is a storm tomorrow we won’t be reduced to kibble robbery.
