Wait until it warms up, a bit

posted in history, technology |

This morning, with urging from behind, I was tasked with figuring out our latest mystery: why was the “shore power” not working. Given the wind chill, I started with online manuals, and learned that the display in the power cabinet of the RV was just a display. The intelligent section was out of sight. I did the obvious, by unscrewing the display unit from its home in the panel and resetting the data cable. Not enough.

However, and this is where I realize that there are other ways to approach a problem, I was asked if I had tried turning up the heat. As in, plugging in a portable heater. Which made no sense to me; without shore power, how would it work? I hadn’t thought this through, and on my next trip outside, the van was running, the heat was on inside, and the display panel was back to normal. I don’t need to know why, when the problem was now just a question for a technician in future.  I won’t argue with success.

Now for a different battle.. In the city where I went to high school, there’s a huge bronze statue of an explorer. Someone who wandered through the area about four hundred years ago. The statue was more recent, and now beongs to Parks Canada. Someone decided that the statue needed a good cleaning, and the big stone pedestal would be better after a rebuild. So, down came the statue. In the interval between down and now, someone decided to overthink the history involved. Now, the sttue is in limbo, while someone (so many nameless characters) will decide if the statue should  even be brought back. Local sensitivities, etc. Now we wait for the concluding episode.
