Akin to a basket of puzzles

posted in education, technology |

Technology: just like a basket of puzzles. We thought we had the world conquered, when plugging a media drive into the USB port on our TVs (multiple) allowed us the freedom to choose titles from a menu. Oh, and then watch the chosen program in living colour. For those who envision life away from the umbilical cord of either cable or satellite, it doesn’t get much better

Until a second (and then third) drive is tested, and IT DOESN’T WORK. I enjoy puzzles, so a number of possible explanations came to mind. A bad USB cable. Incorrect voltage/current. A different type of hard drive. Unfortunately, all of these ideas have proven to be without merit, so I’m now back to seeking an alternate strategy. Could mean bringing a laptop along (or a Pi… have to test that idea tomorrow).

We could accept to read books and watch the scenery, but our habits are pretty much set in place. That phrase about teaching old dogs new tricks? I’m ready for that scratch behind my ears.

And who know; maybe by tomorrow, the problem will have self-solved. I’ve been fiddling with hardware long enough to go with that as the answer to more questions than I care to remember. Why, we once had a whole lab of IBM machines where you had to periodically swap the power cords… No, not touching that one right now, even though it left most visitors with a sense of savvy going home confused.

I’ll let you know when I find the answer. For the record, and all that.
