The best cups, in war or otherwise

posted in environment |

Once in a while, the dishwasher gets called upon to wash memories. Specifically, today, the camping kitchen gear. We don’t cook over a Coleman stove much anymore. Change of summer habits, mainly. Still, the stuff gets taken out and run through the hot/wet cycle, as a reminder that we still could collapse into a tent, after hours of feeding the local mosquito population.

Among the treasures are a few utensils that haven’t actually been used. Thank you, Paderno Arena sales. That tiny cheese grater sure looks practical. Ditto for the different sizes of spatulas. The rest of the stuff is recycled from our regular tableware, so no big revelation.

However, there are my Melmac cups. I’ve had these for about half a century now. Got them from one of the uncles that was “Reg Forces”, back in the day. Unbreakable. The stain from coffee goes away with a good shot of bleach, or some time building sand castles. They have a certain air about them. Ready to go to war, if ever the moment arises. I think we’ll add them to the RV (based on the unbreakable grade).

As for the various pots and pans, I pointed out to the other half of the kitchen staff that we weren’t likely to boil pasta over an open flame, so the speckled blue affair with the bail can be left at home. And the non-stick pans with the non-stick worn away will find their place in a garage sale, eventually. If I have to sneak them in under cover of darkness.
