New old beans
Did you know that coffee beans are due for a scientific experiment? After our recent freezer failure, I happened to have some older bags of beans. With a new shipment of fine Tarrrazu (brought back from our travels) ready to join the barista corner stocks, I decided to get rid of one of those older bags. Well, not “get rid of”; how about “use”, given the value.
And here’s the thing. Just one variable changed, but my whole extraction process is now unstable. I didn’t change the grind or the temperature or the time; only the variety of beans. And suddenly, I have “pucks”, like last year. Which also doesn’t make sense, because we were using Tarrazu then, too. I need to read more. Or watch another evening worth of YouTube videos.
Last evening, we were social. Today, I’m back to my routine of watching the dog watch me watch him. There was a trip to the city, but I declined the departure. With a storm incoming, I wanted no adventure. I’ve been told that visibility dropped to zero (St. Peter’s, where snow storms and fried fish intermingle). And that closer to the city, things went back to seasonal normal. That means (wait for it) that I can now map out winter travel conditions, based on local geography. Put a rule-based strategy in place: “If it snow, St. Peter’s will get the worst of it”. Time for the Department of Highways to step up their game. Some big signs. Flashing lights. Perhaps a bypass (whole other story, here on the Island).
