Confused mall-rats

posted in economy |

I admit, I don’t go shopping often, with the exception of groceries, so venturing into the retail world is a new experience each time. For the better-trained clients, the stores have another option: change the environment.

In the rat in a maze analogy, the rat learns to navigate the puzzle world. Less time in the maze is the result of goal-directed learning. In the shopping experience, less time in the maze is counter-productive to the retailer, so…

Change the environment.

I went to our local CanTire store, and my impression is that the giant in charge simply took the big box and shook, until all the contents went to new locations. It took me a “real long time” to find anything, including the cash registers. I still bought stuff, so the giant is probably happy.

In the next store over, my article showed a different price on the register display than on the shelf, so I asked for a price check. After a long wait, the store decided that sending someone to actually verify the price wasn’t worth it, and I received my article for free. Profits are good, I guess.

When the sun shines again (today it’s “a rainy one”) I now own my first two solar panels. At 1.8 watts each, I won’t be shutting off my Hydro feed soon, but green starts with small seeds.
