Stories worth mentioning

posted in economy, media |

Some people are unable to avoid being noticed. Take our mayor, with a guitar (please!). Last weekend, the police in a small town north of Montreal wondered why one of the local fire trucks was “wandering” around town, with the siren and power lights on, when they’d heard nothing over the radio. They gave chase (at low speed), and when the big red tanker was finally immobilized, the driver jumped out (hurting himself from the fall) and then ran away with the forces of law and order in pursuit. I didn’t see it, I didn’t hear it, but I can imagine the scene. (Taken from a CP story).

The “biggest show in town”, a video presentation projected on the grain silos on the Quebec City waterfront nightly during this summer, will continue for a few more weeks. After protests from local residents about the repetitive nature of the soundtrack (from their viewpoint), and its distraction for children that should be sleeping, the city has agreed to show things a bit earlier each evening. Nothing is free anymore, so the producer will receive additional cash for the fortnight of extra “screenings”. A paltry $546 766.00 (you can do the math).

A local park warden arranged for a group of about a dozen youth to embark on a twenty day canoe-camping trip this summer, accompanied by five guides and two videographers. The bill for the three weeks came to somewhere over $220 000.00, which explains why more youth aren’t getting out into nature and enjoying the pleasures of the great outdoors. Believe me, for less money, each participant could have had their own Wii and whatever game simulates paddling your own canoe.
