The end of vacation

posted in environment |

Act Two always started with the sad phrase, “Where did the summer go to?”. This is my last day of vacation, so I’ll hum the melody as the evening fades to sleep. Not much else to do. Mind you, even today was handled as if I didn’t have a care in the world. Bring on the ice cream.

Old Home Week plays with the schedule of other things on the Island; when I called the lawyer’s office this morning, he answered his own phone because the office staff was out wandering the midway. After confirming the mailing address (as printed on his business card, the only official document we’ve received from the firm so far), I headed up to the nearest postal counter and arranged for “our land payment” to be sent to its rightful owners. This is one of the biggest purchases I’ve ever been involved with, but it seems right.

This afternoon, facing a severe lack of coffee, we packed up and headed for the Vieux. After a bowl, and a grind, we sauntered on down the street, surrounded by thousands of other tourists on a beautiful summer afternoon. We learned that public washrooms in the local Big Mac are used for many things that might upset the local mayor, if he only knew. He did appear on the front page of the paper with a guitar, a sign that he remains in control. We also bought books, old movies and something dealing with an allergy to nickel…

The city is in a heightened state of excitement right now. The agricultural fair is in full “swing your partner” season. The local Acadian population is celebrating by beating pots and pans in a public way. Moby is on Beauport Beach, along with our kids and many thousands of others. Streets are blocked here there and everywhere by the police, which explains the washroom serving as a site for prohibited substance use. Priorities and all that stuff.

We wandered around the mall, finding out that there are even more acronyms in the audio/video world. I now own a DVI/HDMI cable without understanding why. Our family also has another cellphone, thanks to the expert advice of Stephanie, possibly the best telecommunications merchant I’ve ever seen in action. The trick with a “rare” discount coupon left me breathless.

Someone across the way is celebrating with a band in their back yard and fireworks. Special.
