Bright lights in a darkened room

posted in technology |

This afternoon, after making THE arrangement for the next place we will live, we headed over to the shops to see what might have been invented in the world of technology since the start of the summer. Not much. However, the enticement of an extra 10% removed from any purchase at one store, because we muddle in the world of education, was too good to let slip away.

The idea of a new TV doesn’t make much sense, in a world of YouTube. However, the idea of a projector to display such content in larger-than-life does. Particularly when the price is right. Off to the aisle where the expensive toys are kept. The first thing that caught our eye was the shelf tags; nothing seemed to be in its proper place. Next detail, the light weight of the projectors. Of course – remove all the guts and leave a shell to attract the victims. It doesn’t even need alarm tethers, as a thief that is dumb as a sack of hammers deserves to leave the store.

With the help of a former student, all was soon resolved. The actual units are kept in drab cardboard boxes out back, and we were soon proud owners of an Optoma EP-721, complete with carrying case (hidden away inside the drab cardboard box). Given the sale price, further padded with a reduction, we came away with about $300 in savings over an identical unit in the neighbouring merchant. Pretty good, considering that we weren’t even planning to buy one.

The session led to purchase of a set of speakers, so that we now have the beginnings of an entry level home cinema system. I can’t wait to see if son #2 has a CPU with TV card to offer up on the altar of home entertainment. Now we can stay up late watching bad movies on something that is more “up to date” than the 27 inch big box we’ve learned to control (two remotes for every action).
