Planning our own activation activity

posted in ham radio |

I knew something like this would happen; I showed a bit of interest in joining a club of like-minded individuals, and now I’m part of an organizing team. In the works, a weekend “activation” of the lighthouse up the road. We’re going to install some antennas and transceivers, and then we’re going to advertise our presence to the world. As if a big flashing light on the roof wasn’t enough.

To be fair, I’m trained for such activity. Professionally trained, if that’s possible. Calling out and then logging the replies… I know how to do that. Doesn’t matter if we use a scribbler, or a laptop, or a throwback to the old days, with a “mill”. Been there, done that. As for keeping a station on the air for a full 48-hour period; I’m out of practice, that’s all.

Perhaps I can attract some like-minded individuals. Are you listening, old timers?

With my morning meeting (for organization) safely ended, I was free to return home and enjoy the quiet of a sunny afternoon. No, I didn’t go to the beach. But I could have, and that’s what really matters. Several years ago, I would have needed to drive for a full day to even have the possibility. Now, I can pull on my flip-flops and fly up and down the sand. Squeaking as I go (singing sands, etc). Perhaps when the kids come down, I’ll make a point to join them. By that date, the jellies should be off to wher’er they go. Not my worry.
