Planning for summer: easy, easy, easy

posted in humour |

Although there aren’t many things, one facet of life before retirement has come back to haunt me. I now have no discipline when it comes to scheduling my calendar.

Before, things were simple. I “owed my soul to the company”, and my Monday to Friday routine allowed my to predict where I would probably be on any given day in the calendar. After all, once you add in the weekends and legal holidays, work fits nicely between the curbs. And planning for summer; easy, easy, easy.

This afternoon I was asked if I’d like to go camping on a particular date. I had no idea how to respond. I asked, feebly, “Is there anything already on the calendar?” Now I have to make a decision (the first in ages). Do we camp before OR after the end of the month?

I understand that reservations were made, this afternoon. I now have the added responsibility of finding the tent, checking it for stability, deciding if we are camp cookers or restaurant hunters. On and on. I probably won’t be able to sleep, with the added stress, between now and … What were those dates, again?

My former life, chained in a cubicle during daylight, meant that the calendar was an absolute. Miss the vacation window and wait for another turn around the sun (the long turn, not that wimpy 24 hour game).

So, if I’m a bit distracted for the next fortnight, you’ll know why. I’m in the eye of the storm. May the weather be merciful.
