For want of a fair fee structure

Forget the storm that never appeared, as there are more menacing clouds on the local horizon. The government has promised (threatened) higher tuition fees for the post-secondary crowd. Not “on a par with other jurisdictions”. Just, higher. Marginally. But the student has something that the average citizen doesn’t; time to protest.

Explore by daylight, preferentially

Exploring new parts of town? Best choose something other than “a dark and stormy night”. Now I know.

I arrived home just in time to get the designated driver position. Forget supper. Get your coat on and go. Educational priorities. Son #2 needed to get to an institution on the other side of the city in less time than the public transit method (anything takes less time than evening bus travel). Not a familiar address; not even a familiar borough.

A telling time

Part of my paid life is spent as a fly on the wall, or, as my employer prefers to call it “the technician designated to your meeting”. Whatever. I’m the person that sits in a corner and makes sure that everything you do with technology works, rather than degrading into a session of bad language over yet another failure to respond to your needs.

Beyond the inner circle

I’m getting older and I’m getting cynical.

Maybe I should stop reading newspapers, watching TV, listening to the radio; in fact, it’s time to retire to a deserted island where the only government is me and mine. When I was young, political parties didn’t take up much space in my world. I could name several, recognize the leaders in profile; do what pollsters hoped I would. But then I started to work, pay taxes, resent the waste of my efforts by others.

Half of those who try, can’t

Read a good book lately? Ever? According to a recent study on literacy in Canada, 50% of “us” haven’t. Or at least, not with a reasonable level of comprehension. I read that statistic with great sadness.

In lieu of editorial process

Here’s a hypothetical question: What would my blog be like if I had an editor? Not wanting to put any ideas in other minds, let’s leave this as an unrealistic thought, but play with the concept.

The pain of home repair

The hidden cost of home repair – physiotherapy.

Somewhere in the piles of stuff available at the local box store, there must be a guide to good posture. Otherwise, we’ve got lots of soft tissue injury that isn’t catching the attention of the medical world. Here’s the thing. Any time I “install” something around the house, I learn that it’s actually done while lying on the floor in pretzel form, while aiming a flashlight using available body parts.

Fragile data

In the same way that stubbing your little toe seems to interrupt the whole nervous system, a fingerprint on a CD will disrupt your day.

Dim driver, no lights on

Out in the car with son #3, drawing attention to the things that make it hard to be a safe driver; boy, it’s not easy to protect yourself against the idiot class.

Once a student, always a student

Today was the first day of school; at least that’s what it felt like.

We’re back from summer vacation, and we work in the field of education. No, we don’t get the whole summer off… that’s a myth, unfounded, proven wrong, fallacious. I’ll stop now. We’re back to work after our vacations, which just happen to fall in the climatic period known as summer.  Gathered together for some coffee and other stuff, we held a full quorum office meeting. With me, so far?
