Once a student, always a student
Today was the first day of school; at least that’s what it felt like.
We’re back from summer vacation, and we work in the field of education. No, we don’t get the whole summer off… that’s a myth, unfounded, proven wrong, fallacious. I’ll stop now. We’re back to work after our vacations, which just happen to fall in the climatic period known as summer. Gathered together for some coffee and other stuff, we held a full quorum office meeting. With me, so far?
Our CEO is a “graduated” teacher. Not former; once an educator, always… it’s genetic, some believe. And what do teachers do, on the first day of school after summer ends? Just what we did. We described our summer vacations. OK, not all of us. There were selections made in a full classroom, and only a few anecdotes were shared with the rest of the group. Just enough to keep us interested and wanting more. That’s what good teachers do.
Might I cast a doubtful eye on the motivation? We aren’t students, any more, and this was clearly an avoidance technique. Either we go along with the activity, or the happy times end and we go back to work. Although, I do remember times when we (the class) “played” an unsuspecting teacher in exactly this way.
Perhaps we never outgrow the strategies learned while sitting in neat rows before a chalkboard. In keeping with the sentiment that learning is a life long process, maybe we remain as students (in our behaviour) for the whole of our lives. Ever noticed how noisy a roomful of adults become when not under direction of a leader? Told you so.
