And then (again) there was one

The shelf life of an idol is one year. Proven. After that, the stage spins one hundred and eighty degrees, and behind the curtain we see another idol. Don’t worry about false idols, because they’re all real. It’s just that the best before date creeps up and then, politely, you’re history.

Sometimes the talent leaves

We’re too close to the end of the season. People are losing their focus. How else to explain that sixty million votes were cast (that’s about twice the population of Canada, as if we counted) on American Idol this week, and still Melinda Doolittle went home. Not once, but twice, in the same broadcast. As we head into the final week, the program just earned a renaming, to American Idle, because that’s what the braintrust was on this one.

The season is starting to firm up

Slow to find it’s measure this season, the American Idol monster is starting to firm up. Last evening, the demure Gwen Stefani gave the performers all the room they needed, a bit of professional praise and added another star presence to a show that has proven for years to be a true entertainment value.

I want my M-T-V

It’s all about the presentation. Under the shadow of a really big storm, hoping like any other little kid that the radio would announce school closure. Staying under that shadow, watching the approach of a maybe really big storm through the day via various webcams and hoping the office manager would send us home before any danger presented itself. Home to watch the “red screens” on the weather channel. It’s all about the presentation, and this storm is slow in arriving.

Doubleheader to start the season

No baseball fans at our house, but I can see how a doubleheader would have appeal to the real afficionado. My tastes run to something more eclectic. Think of another competition that carries hits, misses, errors, stealing bases. Focus. Foul balls. And once in a while, things go straight out of the park.

When in doubt, modify the rules

There we go, another episode of “America’s Got Talent”. Entertaining, but I still don’t quite understand. Oh wait, neither do they. Another variation on the rules was announced tonight! It doesn’t really matter, because they’re already gearing up for next year, even though the finals (sometime soon, really!) aren’t here yet.

No delay

The announcement for the 2006 AI was made just before bedtime yesterday. The availability of the Best Of album and the winner’s solo album took somewhat less than twenty-four hours. Obviously, the “leakage” of new media, either audio or video, is not dependent on some teenager with a local HMV… The whole manner in which new content becomes available intrigues me. The fictional series “The Scene” and its other dimension parody “Teh Scene” gave one possibility on how the leaky media faucet runs. The war on such leaks by the **AA supports another. I just don’t know… from my chair, it looks too easy and timely to be accidental.

And then there was one

The long marathon jog to another AI is over: with only minutes remaining in the final stage of that cross-America race, the vote result (not the results, an important nuance when dealing with budding careers) showed us that Kat would have to settle for second place. Something I doubt she has had to do many times in her two decades on earth. Taylor Hicks hair, which did not go prematurely grey from the rigours of this competition. will carry home the gold and will eventually record for more gold, if you follow me.

Idle idol

The long winter of our discontent is over. The end is in sight. American Idol 2006 sent the next-to-the-last contestant home tonight, leaving us with only the coronation left, really. My idle time projecting who will be our next idol is all but done. With the fiery brightness of a pair of shooting stars, Taylor “Grey hair IS cool” Hicks and Katherine “Looks ARE important” McPhee will go to the wire in less than a week. It’s been good light entertainment. Thank you, Coke and Randy and Paula and Simon.

Idolize

It’s back. Season five of American Idol, which will see me join my family to idle in front of true entertainment television. Just think about it;, fifteen second clips that prove how few stars there are (astronomy aside). Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson; putting the musical pendulum back to dead center.
