Following directions
I love a good map. I also love a good GPS. Consider how much time has been wasted, over the centuries, following virtual directions. Go west (using that compass you have in a pocket). Turn right when you get to where the purple house used to be. Stay on the old road.
No wonder we have lost so many good people along the way.
I do appreciate that people with children are afraid of getting lost. I live on an island, and if you go far enough in any direction other than down, you will find water. If you reach the sand, you should stop and wait for the rest of us.
Once one has learned some simple: “Simon Says” level of commands, you can send the child over to the next door house. Turn left works, once you get your bearings. In an ideal world, we would have qualified guides on duty in every house, but for now, we have maps. Not all good, but the alternative is worse.
To be fair, I do not need a map for most of my daily duties. I am smart enough to stay home and wait. One more bit of wisdom: if the directions involve a big tree, I think it blew down in a big storm. Ask for the updated references or for the designated navigation team. Could this be why my siblings are so reluctant to visit? Getting lost is not much fun. Getting found is better. Knowing the way is the absolute best.
